P eter Thom­son’s elec­tion as Pres­i­dent of the United Na­tions Gen­eral Assem­bly is a great hon­our, says Prime Min­is­ter Voreqe Bain­i­marama. Mr Bain­i­marama joined many yes­ter­day to con­grat­u­late the per­ma­nent rep­re­sen­ta­tive of Fiji to the UN, say­ing Mr Thom­son will carry out his re­spon­bil­i­ties with “ded­i­ca­tion, wis­dom and fore­sight.” Mr Thom­son de­feated An­dreas Mavroyian­nis of Cyprus 94-90 votes. Mr Bain­i­marama said: “It is the first time a rep­re­sen­ta­tive of one of the Pa­cific Small Is­land De­vel­op­ing States has been cho­sen to lead the United Na­tions Gen­eral Assem­bly and it has given Fiji and the other is­land na­tions a new and stronger voice in New York,” he said. “Mr Thom­son’s se­lec­tion
