Sprinter Banuve Tabakaucoro and javelin thrower Leslie Copeland have a good chance of qualifying for the Rio Olympics next month. Competitions manager for the Melanesian Athletics Championship Anthony Curry made the comment yesterday ahead of the competition which starts at the ANZ Stadium in Suva on Thursday. “We are hopeful that Tabakaucoro and Copeland would qualify from this meet,” Curry said. “Banuve is few seconds away from the Olympic Games standard time in the 100 and 200 metres.” The Pacific Games sprint champion trained at the Oceania Athletics Centre in Gold Coast last month. “Banuve is looking good and we hope that he qualify from this event. We are also optimistic that Copeland would also qualify.

“This event is the last of the qualifying events for the Olympics and we expect athletes to perform to their best.”
