30 more new places for schol­ar­ships

Stu­dents to Ben­e­fit from Top­pers Increase: Reddy

The increase in the al­lo­ca­tion for the Top­pers Scheme by $600,000 for the 2016/2017 Na­tional Bud­get has been wel­comed by Min­is­ter for Ed­u­ca­tion, Her­itage and Arts, Ma­hen­dra Reddy.

“An al­lo­ca­tion of $10.6m for the Top­pers Scheme in the 2016/2017 bud­get is good news for stu­dents in the coun­try,” Mr Reddy said. “This is an increase of $0.6m from the last bud­get.

“This ad­di­tion comes with the ini­tia­tive to of­fer 30 more new places un­der the Top­pers scheme, bring­ing the to­tal now to 630 schol­ar­ships to be taken.” Mr Reddy said the Ter­tiary Ed­u­ca­tion Loan Scheme and the Na­tional Top­pers Scheme had grown leaps and bounds since it was ini­ti­ated in 2014. “The Ter­tiary Ed­u­ca­tion Loan Scheme and Na­tional Top­pers Scheme which was ini­ti­ated by our gov­ern­ment in 2014, has un­locked nu­mer­ous doors of op­por­tu­ni­ties for many aspir­ing Fi­jians,” said Mr Reddy. “This pro­gramme was brought in to can­cel out the plight of all Fi­jians who faced lots of dif­fi­cul­ties in their quest for higher ed­u­ca­tion. “We have shifted the load from those par­ents who were mak­ing ends meet just to send their chil­dren for ter­tiary ed­u­ca­tion. “Some had been tak­ing huge loans and were un­der so much stress and pres­sure. “We promised this sup­port and we have de­liv­ered it and be rest as­sured that this scheme will at­tain higher bench­marks of ser­vice in the fu­ture.” Source: Min­istry of Ed­u­ca­tion
