Minister for Education Mahendra Reddy said the $18.8 million allocated for the technical colleges confirmed the Government’s support and investment in this area.

“The 2016/2017 budget allocation of $18.8m for the Technical College of Fiji will further improve the facilities at the 12 Technical college campuses in the country,” Mr Reddy said.

“This allocation reflects confirmation of our Government’s tremendous support and investment in this venture.” Mr Reddy said the increased enrolment numbers over the last two years reflected the demand in this area of preparation for the youth. “The demand for Technical College of Fiji is reflected in our increased enrolment numbers over the two years and we will continue to ensure that the supply of facilities at the campuses is up to par,” Mr Reddy said.

“This national institution intends to raise the standards of our tradesmen and women throughout Fiji by giving them better access to formal qualifications to improve their skills. “The Technical College campuses offer a range of opportunities not only to children who make technical education their career path but also to adults and working people who take up short courses to polish on their skills and talents.”

The allocation of $1,797,450 for specialised equipment, which is an increase from the last budget, will include purchases of specialised equipment such as, standalone freezer, static power machines, agriculture machines and other equipment that will be needed for the programmes offered at the various campuses.

“This will increase the quality of practical classes on offer for the students and thus, uplift their practical applications of on the job experience,” Mr Reddy said. “We want our children to experience first-hand the processes that they will encounter in the job site so that they master these skills and their transfer to the work sector is smooth.”
