Three un­cles, step­brother jailed for rap­ing fam­ily mem­ber

The High Court in Suva yes­ter­day sen­tenced four men for rap­ing a fam­ily mem­ber in 2014. Jus­tice Priyan­tha Fer­nando said: “You have breached the trust of the vic­tim who stayed at your home be­cause her fa­ther was in jail. “Fam­ily loy­alty pre­vented the mat­ter from get­ting out as the mother told her daugh­ter not to report the mat­ter be­cause her brothers will be taken to task.” All four men pleaded not guilty to the charges. The in­ci­dent oc­curred at Nau­sori. The vic­tim, who was a 15 years old at the time, was raped by her three un­cles and step­brother on dif­fer­ent oc­ca­sions.

First ac­cused (un­cle), who is 38 years old, has been sen­tenced to 13 years and 6 months in jail with a non-pa­role pe­riod of 12 years. Sec­ond ac­cused (un­cle), who is 41 years old, has been sen­tenced to 13 years and 9 months, with a non-pa­role pe­riod of 12 years. Third ac­cused (un­cle), who is 37 years old, has been sen­tenced to 13 years and 6 months im­pris­on­ment, with a non-pa­role pe­riod of 12 years. The fourth ac­cused (step­brother), who is 23 years old, has been sen­tenced to 11 years and 6 months, with a non-pa­role pe­riod of 10 years. Edited by Ru­si­ate Mataika
