There will be a new winner in the singles division when the Fiji Badminton Secondary School Championships starts today at Yat Sen Secondary. Natabua High School and Yat Sen Secondary are the only schools taking part. Natabua won the girls’ team event last year while Yat Sen won the men’s but this year there will be new winners in the singles category. “The two winners in the singles category last year will not be competing so out of the 40 students, there will be a new winner,” Fiji Badminton vice-president Dennis Fong said. “In terms of team events, Natabua and Yat Sen should defend their girls’ and boys’ divisions. “I think the likely ones who have a chance of winning the singles category is Shristy Nandan and Liam Fong as they are both very good players. “While we’ve only been having two schools competing, we are expecting to include more schools in next year’s championships. “We are trying to start up a schools programme whereby we have eight or nine schools and if things go well, next year’s competition should be bigger. The championships start at 9am.
