Net­ball champs in Lawaqa

Pun­jas and Dig­i­cel Fiji will jointly spon­sor the Na­tional Net­ball Cham­pi­onships for the third suc­ces­sive year. The tour­na­ment will be played at Lawaqa Park in Si­ga­toka to­mor­row and Satur­day. The cham­pi­onship will at­tract the largest lo­cal fe­male par­tic­i­pa­tion in the sport with over 500 play­ers ex­pected to par­tic­i­pate. Both com­pa­nies are con­tribut­ing over $35,000 in cash and kind for the two­day cham­pi­onship.

“I am ex­cited that we can con­tinue to sup­port net­ball. This is part of our joint spon­sor­ship which also in­cludes the Su­per League and the In­ter­na­tional Se­ries,” Dig­i­cel Fiji’s CEO, Dar­ren McLean.

“This com­mit­ment high­lights our sup­port to Fiji’s largest fe­male par­tic­i­pa­tion sport. “I am look­ing for­ward to another ex­cit­ing and com­pet­i­tive cham­pi­onships and I know the play­ers from all the teams have pre­pared well for the com­pe­ti­tion.” Pun­jas Group man­ager mar­ket­ing Gopal Jad­hav said they are de­lighted to con­tinue to sup­port a sport that en­hances the em­pow­er­ment of women in Fiji.

“Net­ball pro­motes good val­ues that can con­trib­ute to the suc­cess of women in all spheres of life. We are proud to be as­so­ci­ated with the devel­op­ment of net­ball in Fiji and in build­ing the lives of young girls and women through sports.”

Net­ball Fiji pres­i­dent Wainikiti Bogidrau con­firmed 30 teams have been con­firmed for the 2-day event. “As al­ways, we are ex­pect­ing a tough chal­lenge in the A and B grades of our ma­jor and mi­nor di­vi­sions,” she said. “The grade to watch would be the U20 com­pe­ti­tion as many of th­ese play­ers will be vy­ing to showcase their skills in or­der to im­press na­tional se­lec­tors.” A team from the Fiji-Auck­land com­mu­nity will also field a team in the U20. Suva is the de­fend­ing champs of the three grades in the ma­jor grade while Naitasiri was the mi­nor grade win­ner last year. The cham­pi­onship starts at 8.30am on Fri­day.
