Amagistrate has told a man his behaviour needs to be denounced in a domestic violence case. Taveuni magistrate Shageeth Somaratne then sentenced Ravi Chand to six months in jail. He said a custodial sentence was warranted to deter people from committing violence against women in this country. Mr Somaratne has ordered that Chand will serve three months in the Corrections Centre while the remaining three months will be suspended for three years. Chand pleaded guilty to both the counts of assault causing actual bodily harm and breaching a domestic violence restraining order. On June 27, Chand came home and found his wife sleeping with the children. He started kicking her while asking for a mattress to sleep on. When she asked him to wait, he punched her on the left side of the head. Mr Somaratne said: “You were under the domestic violence order when you assaulted your wife as the purpose of granting this restraining order was to protect your wife from future violence, but this has not deterred you from assaulting her.” For the safety of his wife, a permanent domestic violence restraining order with standard non-molestation conditions, has been granted by the court.
