Ja­pan braces for pow­er­ful Typhoon

Tokyo: Ja­pan’s weather agency yes­ter­day warned of heavy rain, strong wind and rough seas as Typhoon Lion­rock swirled off the coun­try’s eastern coast. The storm was fore­cast to strike eastern or north­ern Ja­pan, pos­si­bly the Tokyo re­gion, early to­day. As of yes­ter­day noon, the typhoon was mov­ing over the Pa­cific Ocean about 340 km south­east of Hachijo Is­land in the Izu is­land chain at a speed of around 25 kph, the Me­te­o­ro­log­i­cal Agency said. It was pack­ing winds of up to 216 kph with an at­mo­spheric pres­sure of 945 hec­topas­cals near its cen­tre. The agency is­sued the warn­ing as the sea­son’s 10th typhoon was ex­pected to gain strength be­fore strik­ing the main­land with heavy rain and strong winds from the early hours of the morn­ing.
