PM overwhelmed with $345K donation by corporate organisations for our 7s heroes
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama yesterday applauded the donation of $345,500 from various business organisations. The donation was in appreciation of the Fijian national 7s team winning the gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics . Mr Bainimarama, who is also the president of the Fiji Rugby Union, said: “I would like to thank all those who have donated to the Fiji Rugby Union and of course to our rugby 7s heroes,” he said. “Thank you very much for the wonderful donation and I know it will go a long way towards helping out the rugby players in their future.” National rep Semi Kunatani was also presented with $30,000 as part of the Government’s promised contribution. The other members of the team received their cheques during the national celebrations in Suva and Labasa last week. A cheque of $34,000 was presented by Jack’s Handicraft. Fijian Holdings Limited contributed $51,000 and Air Terminal Services handed over $45,500. FIJI Water contributed $170,000.
Other donations included gift hampers with 12 sets silver medal and cross pendants by Himmat Lodhia of Lords Jewellers. Fiji Broadcasting Corporation chief executive officer Riyaz SayedKhaiyum also handed over a separate donation.
FIJI Water chief executive officer Rokoseru Nabalarua thanked the team for their performance which he said brought joy to the country. “One of our great challenges over the years was to help Fiji be known to the world with our bottled water,” he said. “We are grateful that we are able to achieve this with some success. “Never did we expect that the world be brought to Fiji in a very big way and a wonderful success earned by the Fiji 7s side after their achievements in Rio.”
