A26-year-old man was remanded by the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday for allegedly raping his 17-year-old sister-in-law. The accused appeared before Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne who has transferred the matter to the High Court in Suva as it is an indictable offense. The accused is charged with two counts of rape and two counts of indecent assault. The alleged incident occurred between June 23 and July 15 in Lau.

Defence lawyer Isireli Ramanu applied for bail, but Police Prosecutor Sergeant Temesi Evo objected. The ground of objection was that it was a domestic violence issue as the accused was related to the victim. Mr Ramanu was told to file a formal bail application to the High Court. The court has been adjourned to September 9.
