Fiji Sun - - Nation - SHAHANI MALA

Good news for parents here whose children have migrated and become Australians. A new temporary parent visa to allow parents of Australians to visit their children for up to five years will commence next year. The announcement of the new temporary parent visa was made by the Australian Minister for Immigration and Border Protection Peter Dutton. Australians have been invited to make written submissions to assist in the design of the visa. “The introduction of such a visa is a significant shift from current visa options for parents. ‘I encourage migrant communities to get involved in the consultation process and provide feedback to assist in the design of this visa’ Assistant Minister Alex Hawke said in a statement released yesterday from the Australian Immigration and Border Protection. Australians who wish to make a written submission on the development of a temporary stay parent visa or on issues raised in this discussion paper, can email it to temporary.parent.visa@border.gov.au All submissions should be received by midnight on October 31, 2016. Submissions received after this deadline may not be considered. DIBP prefers to receive submissions as a Microsoft Word (.docx) files. PDF files are acceptable if produced from a Word document or similar text based software. The Australian Government will announce full details later this year. The Turnbull Coalition government yesterday confirmed it will implement its election commitment to introduce a new temporary sponsored parent visa.

“The Turnbull Government recognises that many Australian migrant communities face particular pressures through the separation of children from parents and grandchildren from grandparents,” Mr Hawke said. “We want to help families reunite and spend time together, while ensuring that we do so in a way that does not burden Australia’s health care system. “Improving arrangements for parents of Australians to spend time with their family in Australia, whilst mitigating costs to the Australian taxpayer, was a key objective of both major parties at the recent election. “It is now important we get this balance right in the design of the temporary sponsored parent visa.”
