Labasa thrashed Suva 3-0 in the Voda­fone Premier League match at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nau­sori yes­ter­day. Labasa coach/man­ager Ravi­nesh Chand fielded a mix­ture of young and se­nior play­ers. “We lost a lot of play­ers dur­ing the trans­fer win­dow so we de­cided to field our Un­der-20 play­ers and they showed that they can win games for Labasa,” Chand said. “The per­for­mance is a wake-up call to the se­nior play­ers to step up their game. “Be­fore com­ing into the game, I told the boys that the win was im­por­tant. “We were pa­tient and took ad­van­tage of op­por­tu­ni­ties. “Since we only had three play­ers on the bench we won’t be mak­ing changes to the team to play Rewa on Sun­day.” Mean­while, Suva coach Gur­jit Singh ac­knowl­edged that it was a good a game. “It was a good game and Labasa was the bet­ter side.” Labasa will play their sec­ond game against Rewa at Ratu Cakobau Park at 4pm to­day.

What hap­pened?

Labasa had the early ad­van­tage ap­ply­ing pres­sure on Suva’s de­fence, few shots at goal by Christo­pher Wasasala. Labasa’s Ratu Anare put the vis­it­ing team ahead in the 20th minute. Half­time: Suva 0-1 Labasa Labasa’s Akimi Ralulu ex­tended the lead in the 50th minute, 2-0. Suva’s at­tempt to make a come­back proved dif­fi­cult as play­ers failed to find their form.

Pita Rabo had the op­por­tu­nity to close the gap for Suva but the ball was de­flected by a Labasa de­fender. In the 74th minute, new­comer Shamal Lal scored the third goal catch­ing Emori Ra­gata off guard, 3-0. Big Play: Labasa played with pur­pose and con­trolled the game. Star turn: Shamal Lal im­pressed with his first goal.
