If all Global Hand Washing Day participants advocate for hand washing with soap every day, there could be a significant progress in increasing hygiene. This was the message by Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services, Alex O’Connor. He was addressing more than 600 students from eight Lautoka schools during the Global Hand Washing Day celebrations at the Girmit Centre in Lautoka yesterday. He said even though the event targeted school children, the message for everyone was simple. “Especially mothers and fathers, family members and teachers who have a lot of influence on the health of our children; help supervise and establish the hand washing habit,” Mr O’Connor said. He highlighted to the students that through this one habit could make significant progress in moving towards the goal of increasing hygiene programmes, investment and behavioural change. Mr O’Connor thanked the sponsors: UNICEF, SPC, Live & Learn, Fiji Teachers Association Wash, Protex, Ocean Soap, World Health Organisation, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health for their continued support in making the event bigger every year. The programme saw students participate in Global Hand Washing Day oratory, poster and hand washing competition. The theme for this year’s Global Hand Washing Day was ‘making hand washing a habit.’ Edited by Rusiate Mataika
