Fans en­joy mu­si­cian’s fes­ti­val

Close to 100 fans turned up yes­ter­day for the Jazz and Blues Fes­ti­val which was a trib­ute to leg­endary gui­tarist, Tom Mawi at the Hol­i­day Inn in Suva. The fans en­joyed the open­ing with sev­eral pieces from the leg­end Mr Mawi be­fore other lo­cal artists took to the stage. “I know Tom Mawi per­son­ally we are here just to cel­e­brate his life as a mu­si­cian,” said fan Ne­mani Mati. “He’s 75 now and I’ve fol­lowed his mu­sic for a very long time.” Mr Mati said he was a big jazz mu­sic fol­lower and con­sid­ered Tom as a very gifted mu­si­cian. An­other fan Madhu Lata said it was a good show and had been a big fan of the Tailevu man. “We just came to see what the at­mos­phere was like and I’ve seen Tom Mawi play be­fore at Bad Dog but me be­ing here I just wanted to see some­thing big­ger to­day.” Other fea­tured artists who per­formed at the con­cert in­cluded Robert Verma, Vude Queen Laisa Vu­lakoro, Ge­orgina Le­dua, Sami and An­nie Mawi, SASSY, Steve Ma­comber, Ken Jan­son, Richard Beyer, One 2 Eight, Salome Bar­avi­lala, Maxie Colum­bus; and Samu and Kathy Waqa.

The con­cert ti­tled ‘At Tom’s Place’ was a home­com­ing for the gui­tarist who was once voted among the top 10 jazz gui­tarists in the world by Down Beat mag­a­zine.
