Youth Group Tar­gets $20K In An­nual Bazaar

Money to help re­build par­ish hall, fence for school and church

Mount Saint Mary’s Par­ish Youth group aims to raise $20,000 from its two-day an­nual bazaar, which ended yes­ter­day.

The fundrais­ing drive is a con­tin­u­a­tion of Mount Saint Mary’s Church in­rais­ing funds to re­build the Par­ish Hall. The hall was de­stroyed in a fire two years ago. Money raised will also go to­wards build­ing a fence for Mount Saint Mary’s School and the church at Mart­in­tar, Nadi. Youth group mem­ber Sain­im­ili Dakai said: “We have, this year or­gan­ised, a many ac­tiv­i­ties for ev­ery­one not only for the Par­ish family but ev­ery­one else to come and join us and take part in the com­pe­ti­tions and learn from one an­other.”

The two-day event at­tracted crowds from Nadi and. “From this bazaar we look for­ward to build our church hall and fence the school com­pound,” Ms Dakai said. Each stall had a theme to cre­ate aware­ness on, which in­cluded the mes­sage of non-vi­o­lence against women and chil­dren. A team of nurses were also present to hold free med­i­cal checks. The Na­tional Fire Au­thor­ity also con­ducted a fire drill.

There was also a flo­ral and singing com­pe­ti­tion or­gan­ised. Ms Dakai said: “There is a huge dis­play of tal­ents and we have have youths to par­tic­i­pate in each of the event.” The project be­gan in 2008 when Par­ish priest, Fa­ther Ipolito Te­bu­rea, ini­ti­ated plans to seek funds for the ex­ten­sion of the church.
