North Otago win Lo­chore Cup

Te Kuiti: Un­der­dogs North Otago de­stroyed de­fend­ing cham­pi­ons King Coun­try 44-22 to lift the Lo­chore Cup yes­ter­day. In Te Kuiti, a cre­ative North Otago side pun­ished King Coun­try mis­takes and de­served their six tries to three win. North Otago will how­ever be pinch­ing them­selves af­ter only two wins in the round robin but a su­perb fin­ish to the sea­son saw them tip over top qual­i­fiers Mid Can­ter­bury in the semis and then King Coun­try to take home the sil­ver­ware. The Lo­chore Cup is played for by the sides that fin­ish fifth to eighth in the Mitre 10 Heart­land Cham­pi­onship. The Old Golds big boys up front kept the Rams in check and fed off King Coun­try’s er­rors, es­pe­cially early on. In the first half King Coun­try dom­i­nated ter­ri­tory and pos­ses­sion but found them­selves 24-8 down. The sec­ond half how­ever was all North Otago, with a much more clin­i­cal, but also en­ter­tain­ing ap­proach.
