Lakeba – Sydney All Stars Final
Lakeba and the Sydney All Stars will play in the final of the Cricket Fiji National Men’s Championship on Monday at Albert Park. Lakeba surpassed Suva Crusaders scoring 218 runs with four wickets to spare to book their spot in the final. Timoci Nadavo got 76 runs while man of the match Josefa Dabea got 86 runs. Team manager Wate Soko said it has been a long time coming for the Lakeba team who has not reached a final in seven years. “Lakeba used to be known for cricket and we want to change that this year,” Soko said.
“This is our sport and this is a sport we play and love. And for the boys to reach the finals is a really big deal for us. “The game against the Suva Crusaders was a very tough one but thanks to Timoci and Josefa, we managed to pull a win.” Going up against the overseas based Sydney All Stars, Soko said they are anticipating a very tough but exciting game. “For the Sydney All Stars to beat the defending champions Suva Warriors is massive which means we will be going up against a really good side,” he said. “The team is made up of former Fiji reps playing overseas so it was no surprise that they beat the Suva Warriors. But we are willing to give our all because we want to win.” The Sydney All Stars beat defending champions Suva Warriors by 42 runs. Sydney scored 165 runs with four overs remaining while Suva was all out in 21 overs scoring 123 runs. Sydney team organiser Aman Prakash said they are looking to create history and a pathway for overseas based Fijians by winning the tournament. “The tournament has been intense and so far we are four out of four and are looking to make it five on Monday,” Prakash said. “We want to make history in this tournament by being the first overseas team to win. We have made it to the finals before but have never won. “Also we want to create a pathway for the Fijians living abroad to have them be up for selection into the national squad. “We know it will be a tough game against Lakeba but we are really looking forward to it.” Lakeba will play the Sydney All Stars tomorrow at 9:30am at Albert Park.
