24 People In 44 Separate Rape, Sexual Offences
There were 24 people charged with a total of 44 separate incidents in October. The figure was release by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). This relates to the number of formal indictments (Information) filed in the High Courts of Fiji by the Director of Public Prosecutions throughout the month. This data is confined to incidents of serious sexual offences only.
The offences were rape (30), abduction with intent to rape (2), assault with intent to rape (2) incest (5) and sexual assault (5). There was one person charged under the age of 18 years. There were 23 victims of the 44 separate incidents. There were a total of 13 victims of serious sexual offences under the age of 18 years. The youngest victim was 6 years old and the accused was her 65 year old grandfather. There were nine sexual offences that occurred where the victims were related to the accused person. There were three matters withdrawn after discontinuances (Nolle Prosequi) was filed. There were two matters where the victims made false complaints. They will be charged for making false complaints.
