Kilaiverata found guilty
Ajudge in High Court in Suva said yesterday that looking at the way Usaia Kilaiverata had assaulted his partner, he intended to kill her. Justice Priyantha Fernando made this comment while convicting Kilaiverata for murder. He concurred with the assessors who also found Kilaiverata guilty of murder. Justice Fernando said: “The assessors did not believe the defence story that the deceased fell on the gas tank and that it was an accident.” Kilaiverata, on April 4, 2015, murdered his de facto partner, McGowan. The court heard that Kilaiverata had admitted in his caution interview that he had punched the deceased and had also kicked her face. He had further admitted that after beating her up and seeing that the deceased was not breathing, he tried to give mouth to mouth CPR to revive her. The defence and prosecution will submit their sentencing submissions and mitigation later today.
