The families of the four loyal soldiers and two Policemen killed during the 2000 political crisis will soon be moving to their newly-built homes in the Nakasi subdivision, Nausori.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama yesterday said he had promised the families that Government would build their new homes. He said it was a show of appreciation from Government to the officers, who lost their lives in the line of duty. “Their deaths should not be in vain,” he said. “The deaths of these soldiers and Policemen changed the country’s political scene as the military moved in to ensure that is not repeated.” Mr Bainimarama yesterday visited the three-bedroom houses under construction by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces engineers and he was impressed by the progress. He bought kava, sat down with the engi-

neers and had a talanoa session to show his appreciation for their work.

He paid a special tribute to the fallen officers and offered his sympathy and support for their families.

Referring to the families, he said: “We cannot get their fathers back as they are no longer with us but the least we can do is to give them a home as this is what they would have done for their families if they were still with us today.” Mr Bainimarama said the families would be at Queen Elizabeth Barracks this morning to join the RFMF in a remembrance ceremony. It would start with a church service at 8am today, followed by a ceremony at QEB as a remembrance for the loyal soldiers and policemen who were killed by rebels and mutineers.

“It is never going to be repeated,” he reiterated. Mr Bainimarama said after the 2001 general elections, the SDL government came up with the very policies that would have led to a similar crisis.

“It came to a point the military said that it was enough and had to step in to scrap away those racist policies and put policies of equality for all races.”
