Tuiketei’s headpiece: A fusion of Pacific blueprint
The Melbourne Cup side event, the hat and fashion competitions are filled with as much craze as the prestigious event itself. About 4000 kilometres away from the home of Melbourne Cup, Ana Tuiketei was announced the winner of the Suva Rotary Club event at the Grand Pacific Hotel. The legal consultant for AP Legal, had her local designers Epeli Tuibeqa and Joanne Ali to thank for her unique headpiece, a fusion of Pacific blueprint.
“I wanted the local designers to design my hat because I want to promote the talent we Fijians have within us,” Ms Tuiketei said. “My hat is inclusive of masi and jewellery, throwing ideas and concept of the Pacific fusion. “My idea was to use and promote local designers so I can give back to the community. “I want to showcase that we Fijians are talented in many ways whether it be music, dance or style while hosting international events,” Ms Tuiketei said. She also encouraged her friends from overseas to invest more into Fijian local designers and help our communities. Best dressed couple was awarded to Nathan Kirk and Erin Addison-Smith. Many of the revelers at GPH included those from Canada, Jamaica.
