Kon­rote Meets Abu Dhabi Crown Prince

Pres­i­dent Ma­jor- Gen­eral ( Ret’d) Jioji Kon­rote re­turns to the coun­try to­day af­ter pay­ing a cour­tesy call on the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, His High­ness Sheik Mo­hamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is also the Deputy Supreme Com­man­der of the United Arab Emi­rates armed forces over the week­end. Both the Pres­i­dent and the Crown Prince agreed to strengthen diplo­matic and bi­lat­eral re­la­tions be­tween Fiji and the United Arab Emi­rates. The Crown Prince was par­tic­u­larly in­ter­ested in the busi­ness, ed­u­ca­tion, en­ergy and em­ploy­ment sec­tors. He as­sured the Pres­i­dent that he will de­ploy a busi­ness del­e­ga­tion to Fiji to ex­plore in­vest­ment op­por­tu­ni­ties, with a fo­cus on the tourism in­dus­try. Pres­i­dent Kon­rote paid the cour­tesy call af­ter he com­pleted his Mid­dle East tour to Fiji’s peace­keep­ing troops and diplo­matic mis­sions and a cour­tesy call on pres­i­dent Salva Kiir Ma­yardit of South Su­dan. The Crown Prince asked for more in­for­ma­tion on the re­build­ing pro­gramme for schools dam­aged by Trop­i­cal Cy­clone Win­ston. He said the UAE could also con­sider of­fer­ing some schol­ar­ships to Fi­jian stu­dents to study in the UAE. The Crown Prince said the UAE was keen to ex­tend as­sis­tance to­wards re­new­able en­ergy sources. Fiji is al­ready a ben­e­fi­ciary of the UAE Pacific Part­ner­ship Fund which is fund­ing so­lar power pro- jects on Lakeba, Ka­davu and Ro­tuma. These projects are help­ing Fiji save more than half a mil­lion dol­lars an­nu­ally on fuel im­ports. The Crown Prince said the UAE could also con­sider more em­ploy­ment op­por­tu­ni­ties for Fi­jian cit­i­zens. Close to two hun­dred Fi­jians now work in the UAE with the ma­jor­ity in the aviation in­dus­try as pi­lots, flight and ground crew. An in­creas­ing num­ber work as nurses and teach­ers.

The Pres­i­dent re­turns to Fiji to­day af­ter vis­it­ing Fiji’s diplo­matic mis­sions in Seoul, Lon­don, Brus­sels, Ad­dis Ababa and Abu Dhabi, and the peace­keep­ing troops in Le­banon, Iraq, Syria, Is­rael, Egypt and South Su­dan. The Pres­i­dent also met with high­level dig­ni­taries in­clud­ing Her Majesty the Queen of Eng­land, the Deputy Prime Min­is­ter of Bel- gium, the Pres­i­dent of Iraq, Prime Min­is­ter of Le­banon, Pres­i­dent of Ethiopia, Pres­i­dent of South Su­dan and fi­nally the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. He also met with the Fi­jian com­mu­ni­ties in all the coun­tries he vis­ited where he up­dated them on the de­vel­op­ments in Fiji. Source: DEPTFO News
