Six Guilty, Three Not, Say Assessors
Assessors in the trial of former Divisional Crime Officer, Manasa Talala and two others found them not guilty of the alleged rape and sexual assault of robbery suspects, the late Vilikesa Soko and Senijeili Boila. At the High Court in Lautoka on Tuesday, the four assessors found Talala, Seruvi Caqusau and Kelevi Sewatu not guilty of all charges. However, they found one former soldier, Pita Matairavula and five other former Police officers Penaia Drauna, Filise Vere, Viliame Vereivalu, Jona Davonu and Senitiki Natakasavu guilty of two counts each of rape and sexual assault. All nine were charged with two counts of rape and sexual assault of Soko and Boila who were in their custody on August 15, 2014. Boila and Soko were taken to a hillside at Malevu, where this incident allegedly occurred. The alleged incident was linked to the death of Soko.
