Six Guilty, Three Not, Say Asses­sors

Asses­sors in the trial of for­mer Di­vi­sional Crime Of­fi­cer, Manasa Talala and two oth­ers found them not guilty of the al­leged rape and sex­ual as­sault of rob­bery sus­pects, the late Vi­likesa Soko and Seni­jeili Boila. At the High Court in Lau­toka on Tues­day, the four asses­sors found Talala, Seruvi Caqusau and Kelevi Se­watu not guilty of all charges. How­ever, they found one for­mer sol­dier, Pita Matairavula and five other for­mer Po­lice of­fi­cers Pe­naia Drauna, Filise Vere, Vil­iame Vereivalu, Jona Davonu and Sen­i­tiki Natakasavu guilty of two counts each of rape and sex­ual as­sault. All nine were charged with two counts of rape and sex­ual as­sault of Soko and Boila who were in their cus­tody on Au­gust 15, 2014. Boila and Soko were taken to a hill­side at Malevu, where this in­ci­dent al­legedly oc­curred. The al­leged in­ci­dent was linked to the death of Soko.
