Drug cul­ti­va­tor gets six years

Adrug cul­ti­va­tor was jailed by the High Court in Suva yes­ter­day for six years and 11 months. Seni­valati Koli, 47, of Ta­mavua was charged for a count each of un­law­ful cul­ti­va­tion of il­licit drugs and pos­ses­sion of il­licit drugs. For the sec­ond count, he was jailed for six months. Judge Jus­tice Priyan­tha Fer­nando said both sen­tences are to run con­cur­rently with a non-pa­role pe­riod of five years and 11 months. On Jan­uary 27, 2016, in Ta­mavua, Koli, a farmer cul­ti­vated 103 plants weigh­ing at 18.2 kilo­grams of mar­i­juana. He was also found in pos­ses­sion of 100 grams of mar­i­juana. Koli had pleaded guilty at the Suva Mag­is­trates Court when the case was first called. It was recorded and the file was then trans­ferred to the High Court for sen­tenc­ing.
