Fiji is proud to be hosting prestigious international sporting events. That was the gist of the message from the Minister for Industry, Trade, Tourism, Lands and Mineral Resources, Faiyaz Koya when he opened the Oceania Beach Volleyball Championship at Smugglers Cove Resort in Nadi yesterday. “We are proud to host such a prestigious event,” Koya said.

“This is adding to Fiji’s growing popularity as a preferred host of international sporting events. We are home to some of the most renowned international events, such as Fiji International (PGA) Tour, World Surfing League and Super Rugby, the inclusion of Beach Volleyball is an additional feather on our cap.”

He said this is the kind of international event Fiji needs to attract in order to showcase our local capabilities in hosting more international and world class competitions. “While the venues and the courts are incredibly beautiful, be reminded that this is only the fraction of what Fiji has to offer. “Our many beautiful islands and sandy beaches, along with our unique hospitality accorded by our people, truly make Fiji a special place.

“The tourism industry is of strategic importance to the Fijian economy, because of its high capacity to generate economic growth and employment, it is built on the commitment and belief in our industry stakeholders,”

Koya said beach volleyball is a sport that would be a force to be reckoned with. “It is dominated by both males and females in the 19 to 35 years age category who are most likely to have young families, hence making beach volleyball a very family and community friendly-sport. Beach volleyball is a fast growing sport in the world, although relatively small in Fiji in terms of becoming a mainstream sporting event.

“I would like to thank Fiji Volleyball Federation and Oceania Volleyball for successfully securing an international sporting event, in its efforts to promote beach volleyball in Fiji and to the global beach community.” Altogether 20 teams from eight countries are participating in this year’s championship, which starts on Thursday.
