Australia and Vanuatu took out the Fiji Open Beach Volleyball Championship titles yesterday. The Australian men’s side of Paul Burnet and Marcus Ferguson beat Papua New Guinea’s Moha Mea and Richard Kilarupa 21-8 and 21-12 respectively. In the women’s category Vanuatu proved too strong for the Australians. The team of Linline Matauatu and Loti Joe took control of Sarah Mattaglene and Brittany Kendall of Australia with the scores of 21-13 and 21-15. There were no semi-finals in the women’s category as the top teams from the pool battled it out in the final.

“This is our first senior competition that we have ever played in and we did not have many expectations but just came to have a go. We came out with a game plan and we just stuck to it,” Burnet said. Ferguson said although they are young they did not know what to expect. “So we played our own game and worked on things that we learn from back home. The competition was tough as we met Fiji in the semi-finals, and the weather condition brought us down a little bit but we managed really well.

“It was a clinical match for us,” he said. Results: Men- New Zealand beat Solomon Islands 21-8, 21-6; Fijian White beat Fijian Red 21-6, 21-18.
