Thirteen-year-old Sports Girl of the Year award recipient says netball is her passion. Year Eight student Doreen Thaggard, from Vashist Muni Memorial Primary School in Navua, received the sports girl award during the school’s prizegiging day yesterday. The Saqani Village lass said she loved netball since she was little and her passion for the sport keeps growing.

“I love netball and the sports girl award is another step for me to take part in the netball competitions around the country,” she said. Thomas Arthur Dunn, from Togoru Village in Navua, was named sports boy of the year. The 13-year-old student said the award had inspired him to become a soccer player in the future. “I play soccer at school and take part in the school competitions but I did not know that my performance was that great to get an award for it,” he said. While considering soccer as his career, Thomas also plans to become an electrical engineer. Edited by Naisa Koroi
