Strong 5.4 earthquake strikes off coast of NZ

AAn earthquake with a pre­lim­i­nary mag­ni­tude of 5.4 has struck off New Zealand’s North Is­land, ac­cord­ing to coun­try’s ge­o­log­i­cal haz­ard mon­i­tor GeoNet. The quake was cen­tred off the coast of the North Is­land in Hawke’s Bay, 70km south-east of Po­ran­ga­hauat at a depth of 37 km. The USGS recorded the earthquake with a pre­lim­i­nary mag­ni­tude of 6.3, while Geo­science Aus­tralia reg­is­tered it as a 6.1.

It comes lit­tle more than a week af­ter a pow­er­ful tremor cen­tred in the up­per South Is­land rocked the coun­try and killed two peo­ple. Thou­sands of after­shocks have been reg­is­tered since a 7.8 mag­ni­tude quake struck near Christchurch. 9News
