Strong 5.4 earthquake strikes off coast of NZ
AAn earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.4 has struck off New Zealand’s North Island, according to country’s geological hazard monitor GeoNet. The quake was centred off the coast of the North Island in Hawke’s Bay, 70km south-east of Porangahauat at a depth of 37 km. The USGS recorded the earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3, while Geoscience Australia registered it as a 6.1.
It comes little more than a week after a powerful tremor centred in the upper South Island rocked the country and killed two people. Thousands of aftershocks have been registered since a 7.8 magnitude quake struck near Christchurch. 9News
