Fiji golf rep­re­sen­ta­tive, Abid Hus­sain has won the Vanua Levu Open Golf tour­na­ment at the Labasa Golf Club last week­end. The 42-year-old had a gross score of 149. “I’ve been play­ing golf for over 20 years but for the last 12 years I have won nu­mer­ous tour­na­ments,” Hus­sain said. “I en­joy play­ing in my home­town be­cause I get to meet my friends and see young golfers tak­ing the field. Golf is a sport that any­one can play and it pro­motes good health. I just hope more young­sters will choose to play golf. Labasa Golf Club sec­re­tary Yuva Ra­jan said they are grate­ful to A. Hus­sain and Com­pany Lim­ited for spon­sor­ing the one­day tour­na­ment. “There were 30 golfers that took part. Di­nesh Lingam a doc­tor at Tave­uni Hos­pi­tal was the over­all net and tour­na­ment run­ner-up hav­ing a gross score of 153. “We were happy to have Hus­sain as his pres­ence on the field in­spired our young golfers. We are go­ing to have our fi­nal tour­na­ment next month. It will be a 36hole golf tour­na­ment and will be staged from De­cem­ber 10 to 11 at the club.” Ra­jan said the event will be known as the Sun In­sur­ance Clas­sic.
