The Permanent Secretary for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Shaheen Ali, met with the Deputy Secretary General of the China Chamber of International Commerce (CCOIC), Cai Guofeng last Wednesday, in Beijing, China.

The meeting was to discuss establishing formal linkages between Fijian and Chinese Business Associations, as well as, establishing the China-Fiji Business Council, in Beijing.

The China Chamber of International Commerce (CCOIC) was established in 1988 by the State Council, therefore, is Chinese Government backed and recognised. The CCOIC has a membership of about 500,000 businesses in China. Its members are not only limited to elite businesses, but also includes small and medium size enterprises.

It is also a national chamber of commerce representing China’s participation in the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and its business unit is the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT).

“The meeting further discussed a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry and CCOIC or relevant agency such as, Investment Fiji and also business to business links with the most representative industry association in Fiji”, added Mr. Ali.

“Therefore, the establishment of a formal ties between the private sectors of the two countries, is the conduit to further enhancing economic ties and also ensuring that genuine and quality Chinese investments are being realised in Fiji”,” he said.

Mr Ali said the objective of a proposed business council would be to bring together, in a more formal and organised manner, various Fijian and Chinese business entities, which have interest in meeting, initiating and expanding business ties with each other”

“This platform can also be used to disseminate accurate information about trade and investment policies in the two countries as well as provide a conduit for advancing trade and investment exchanges in the form of trade missions, investment seminars, and tourism roadshows.”

Mr Ali also shed light on the Fijian Government’s focus on developing the Fijian economy in a sustainable manner and attracting high quality investments that are environmentally conscious, which was strongly supported by CCOIC.
