Tailevu drown vic­tim laid to rest

Rel­a­tives of the late Save­naca Sel­e­vakarua of Naivaka­cau Vil­lage in Tailevu are still try­ing to ac­cept his early demise.

The eight-year-old who is said to have drowned while on a swim­ming trip with friends in the Nakelo River last Wed­nes­day. His body was found the next day. Save­naca was laid to rest yes­ter­day. His un­cle, Sikeli Ravula, 32, said: “We did not ex­pect this to hap­pen. It is re­ally sad but we be­lieve that God will give us peace.” Mr Ravula said their fam­ily was not fi­nan­cially pre­pared for the funeral, but they thanked the Lord and fam­ily mem­bers for their sup­port to give a proper burial for Save­naca.

“As far as I know, this is the sec­ond time some­one died in this river,” he said. Mr Ravula said the death of Save­naca had taught them and other vil­lagers a valu­able les­son. “The vil­lagers are now very care­ful with their chil­dren be­cause we have all learnt a big les­son and that is the need to be alert at all times,” he said.
