The Voda­fone Fi­jian 7s team were guest of the Fi­jian com­mu­nity in Dubai yes­ter­day. Fi­jian pi­lots work­ing for Emi­rates Air­lines hosted the Osea Kolin­isau-cap­tained side and the Ana Ro­qica skip­pered Tele­com Fi­jiana team. To­day the women will play France at 9.44pm, New Zealand at 1.02am and Ire­land and 3.37am to­mor­row. Coach Iliesa Tanivula aims to bet­ter last year’s per­for­mance where they up­set Canada 24-10 in the open­ing match and went on to reach the quar­ter-fi­nals as pool win­ners. But they had to set­tle for sev­enth place on day two.

Russians Failed To Show The Russians failed to turn up for a scrim­mag­ing ses­sion with the Voda­fone Fi­jian 7s team yes­ter­day.

But the team in­ten­si­fied their prepa­ra­tions with an­other solid work­out. Act­ing coach Na­canieli Cawanibuka said the play­ers had a good hit-out among them­selves.

Fiji’s first match is against Canada at 7.52pm to­mor­row and Wales at 11.36pm. The team’s last pool match is against Ar­gentina at 4.48am on Satur­day. Mean­while, the team con­tin­ued to be recog­nised for win­ning the gold medal at the Rio Olympics in Au­gust. The side won Esquire Awards for best team of 2016. Edited by Paula Tu­vuki
