‘Fraud’ Vinend Kumar gets life in jail
Neither a Pundit nor a Doctor, says Justice Temo
Justice Salesi Temo said that murder and attempted rape accused, Vinend Kumar, was nothing but a fraud. Justice Temo made the comment when sentencing Kumar yesterday for a count each of murder and attempted rape. “He was not a pundit and he was not a doctor,” said Justice Temo, in the High Court, Suva.
Kumar, 29, on July 15, 2013, attempted to rape a woman whom he later murdered. He later surrendered himself to the Lautoka Police Station. The incident took place in the woman’s house at Malele, Tavua.
Justice Temo rejected the allegations made by Kumar where he claimed that Police officers had abused him during his caution interview.
Justice Temo said: “The state of the deceased’s injuries spoke volumes of her death and that she suffered from a broken teeth and broken jaw. “The deceased met her death after being hit four times with a grog pounder iron rod and then struck by a table.” The deceased was a 53-year-old woman suffering from a sickness for which she had approached Kumar to make medicine for her because he was known as a herbalist. Kumar was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 17 years, which he has to serve before a pardon can be considered by the President. Justice Temo said the sentence was designed to punish Kumar in a manner that was just, and to deter would-be offenders of these crimes. Edited by Naisa Koroi
