Ivi tree hazard

Satish Nakched, Suva

It is with regret to state that the majestic land mark ‘Ivi tree’ at the Vodafone Triangle in Central Business District in Suva is suspected to have gone beyond its useful life. This was exposed after Cyclone Winston. The inner portion of the tree is now badly rotten and the tree trunk cannot support the top-heavy branches. The main trunk looks damaged with a huge split visible in the middle. Being located in the junction of the busy intersection the vehicle noise and movement adds on another dimension to the risk of this hazard. The tree is an antique and a priceless feature in the area and must have witnessed the growth of the city and the unfolding of so many historic events. But due to the ageing factor the said tree is now a huge threat to the pedestrians and the vehicles that goes past it.

Just at the base of the Ivi tree is a park bench, which is used a lot during the summer months, not only by the locals, but tourist as well. I believe a dendrologist should be involved in the risk assessment and issue a safety report.
