Bail granted for 12 on sedition charges
Nadi Magistrate Chandani Dias yesterday granted bail to 11 men and a woman of Nadroga who were arrested for breaching their bail conditions. Adi Cuvu Gavidi, Ratu Tevita Khakhainabowale, Ratu Inoke Tasere, Mosese Navaci, Jimi Korobete, Eroni Rikoriko, Peneasi Naqau, Ulaiasi Rabua, Alifereti Nakunivou, Jorama Ratulevu, Raicula Rokovou and Seru Kunalagi were apprehended on the charges of sedition and granted bail under strict conditions last year by High Court in Lautoka.
According to their bail terms, the 12 accused were not to meet more than three persons who were not their family members, or at a family gathering. However, they allegedly breached this condition by meeting together in Nadi on November 6.
Magistrate Dias, in her bail ruling said the applicants stated that the reason for their gathering was to seek legal advice and they had pleaded not guilty for breaching their bail condition. She said all 12 remained innocent until proven guilty.
Earlier on the Prosecution had objected to the bail saying that the 12 accused had already been on bail and had breached the conditions. Each of the accused were granted bail of a sum of $100 and a surety. Magistrate Dias told them not to offend while on bail.
