Shahenoor’s amazing success
Acollection of 87 certificates, numerous trophies including 11 at this year’s school prizegiving and a collection of medals and awards sits proudly at Shahenoor Saiza Ali’s home in Sarava, Ba. While being commended for being the Outstanding Student of the Year at Kamil College in Ba for 2016, the 18-year-old head girl will be remembered for one personal act of love for her school. Tropical Cyclone Winston devastated Fiji on February 20, leaving a trail of misery. Kamil College was not spared and today some classrooms have not been repaired. On the morning after the cyclone, Shahenoor saw the devastation with debris scattered around their compound. Her first thought was the school so she made her way there. At school, principal Shabina Ali was trying to see what could be done. During the school’s awards day, Mrs Ali said she was surprised to see Shahenoor at school on that fateful day. “She said – ‘Madam, what can I do’,” Mrs Ali said. For Shahenoor, she said it was the love and respect for her school that took her there that morning and she gathered more students in the days thereafter to clean up. Mrs Ali paid special mention to Shahenoor who left her home and gave first priority to the school. Shahenoor plans to attend the University of the South Pacific next year and study law.
