The Fiji Women Lawyers Association handed over half of what they raised from their climbathon fundraiser at Mount Korobaba last month to the Fiji Cancer Society.

The women lawyers following their presenting a cheque of $6000 to the Fiji Cancer Society this week hope to make the climbathon an annual event. The Fiji Women Lawyers Association president Radhika Naidu said as part of the arrangement, 50 per cent of the amount raised was handed over to the society while the other 50 per cent is retained by the association for its future activities which include organising mobile legal clinics. “Following the big turnout and support from businesshouses we are going to make this an annual event,” Ms Naidu said.

“A record 140 climbers took part in the Mount Korobaba climb,” she said.

The climbathon was held on Saturday August 19, in aid of women battling cancer.

The total funds raised through pledges and registrations was $12,000.

“A big thank you to the Fiji Police Force who were out in numbers to provide support and medical assistance if required as well as the major sponsors Fiji Water and Flour Mills of Fiji,” she said. According to Ms Naidu majority of the participants were from businesshouses, law firms and non-governmental organisations. The organisers also had prizes given to individual winner, individual runner-up, team winners, team runner-up and the first female to finish the climb.

Fiji Cancer Society chief executive Belinda Chan said they were very overwhelmed by the support by the women lawyers.

Ms Chan said the donation will help the cancer patients. The society also looked forward to their continued partnership. Korobaba Mount is located seven kilometres outside Suva off Queens Road.

The small mountainous climb of Mount Korobaba amounts to 464 feet high and offers a beautiful view of the region.

From the top of Mount Korobaba one can see Suva there and also the islands of Beqa and Yanuca and Kadavu.

It takes one and a half hours or more to get to the top of Mount Korobaba.
