Lautoka Golf Club will this weekend witness the return of women golfers who will take part in the Geotech Drilling and Investment Services sponsored season opening tournament. Women golfers, who have not taken part in any tournament at the golf course for the past 10 years, will be part of over 80 golfers who were expected to take part in Saturday’s 18-hole individual stroke event.

Club chairman Raymond Singh said the sponsors have showered the tournament with numerous prizes and a giant trophy for the winner.

“Its prizes galore and I have not seen so many for one tournament in a long time,” Singh said.

“I want to thank Gary Barnett for sponsoring the event.

“With the ladies also taking part in the tournament has made this tournament more special because it has been a lapse of 10 years.” Singh said Barnett’s sponsorship will also see more development for junior golfers in Lautoka as this was where Fiji’s future national reps would come from.

“Prizes for this tournament will be competed for in all A, B and C categories, junior, professional and ladies events.”

Singh said the recent heavy downpour in Lautoka has brought about an almost tip-top condition for the fairways and greens and predicts some excellent scores on Saturday. Nadi Airport Golf Club president Munesh Prasad will return to defend his title but will meet stiff competition from Lautoka golfers Surend Pillay, James Krishna, Zabir Ali, Tevita Drauniniu and Ba duo Ashish Chand and Rohit Chandra.

Lautoka’s Ronil Prakash will start as outright favourite in the A category while Sulu Brookes of Denarau Golf and Racquet Club should start as the women’s favourite. Tee off is from 12pm-1.15pm with $20 as the entry fee.
