Aman was buried alive after he was trapped in the hole he helped dig as part of water maintenance repairs in Labasa yesterday evening. Police confirmed that the man had died. His body was taken away from the scene in a body bag as onlookers tried to grasp how the mishap may have taken place.

The man was part of a team contracted by the Water Authority of Fiji to repair underground pipes. Police said the man was climbing out of the hole when he fell back in. The excavation was taking place on Damanu Street, in central Labasa.

Loose soil at the edges of the hole is believed to have fallen in after him and was enough to bury him alive.

Sources at the scene said he would have been buried for at least an hour or one-and-a half hours.

No further details could be divulged as his immediate family had not been informed. Firefighters were at the scene and helped pull the man’s body out. When approached by the Fiji Sun the WAF representative on the scene said he could not comment as the man was an employee of a contractor.
