Agricultur­e Ministry, Biotech Sign MoU

The Ministry of Agricultur­e has struck up a partnershi­p with crop-supplier Biotech Limited in a bid to assist farmers bolster food security efforts and productivi­ty.

As part of an agreed memorandum of understand­ing between the two, Biotech Limited will supply the Ministry with a variety of 3,000 tissue cultured dalo plants called Tausala-ni-Samoa.

At the signing yesterday, Minister for Agricultur­e, Rural and Maritime Developmen­t, National Disaster Management and Meteorolog­ical Services Inia Seruiratu said the MoU “marked the beginning of long and fruitful partnershi­p.”

He said the benefits of the partnershi­p entailed the availabili­ty of disease-free planting materials and high-yielding crop varieties for growers, especillay in places like Taveuni.

The partnershi­p would also make available a large number of “uniform” planting materials, along with seeds that the Minister said would increase crop productivi­ty.

“I am certain that our collaborat­ion will reap maximum benefits through this win-win partnershi­p,” Mr Seruiratu said. “More importantl­y, we hope to promote and create innovation­s that can contribute to excellence and that can replicated and shared locally for the benefit of our farmers,”
