St Marcellin Primary School Under-14 side were crowned winners of the Vodafone Suva Kaji competition after beating John Wesley Primary School 19-7 at the school’s ground on Saturday.

St Marcellin have now qualified for the National Kaji Championship that is scheduled for August at the ANZ Stadium in Suva. Suva Methodist Primary School dominated the lower grades where in the U9 they beat Marist Brothers Primary School 5-0, U10 they edged out Veiuto Primary 7-0 and U11 they drew with Veiuto Primary 7-7.

The U12 grade, Dudley Intermediate School edged out Marist 21-14 and U13 Veiuto Primary beat Gospel Primary School 15-8. Vodafone Fiji Primary Schools Kaji Rugby president Pauliasi Koroi said the teams have already been selected for the national finals. He said Suva would be represented in the U12, U13 and U14 grades while the U9, U10, U11 will stay in the district meet.

“We have the upper grades who will go into the national meet. From the Suva competition the final alone showed how tough it was.

“Parents’ expectations were very high, when they lost they accepted it, but looking at the scores there was not much difference which shows the level that they are playing in.

“There’s a selection criteria that we are following and we have a logical back-up system.

“All teams are looking forward to the national championships,” he added.
