Bulanaire leans on poultry farm to help his family
With our tourism industry taking a massive hit from the COVID-19 pandemic, many from the industry have had to make adjustments to how they survive.
One such man is Bulanaire, Ashitosh Yadev Datt, who is spending his time with his poultry farm. A Bulanaire is one of many who are selected from different parts of the tourism industry by Tourism Fiji to help share the ‘Bula Spirit’ with the world.
“At the moment I’m on unpaid leave, and it has made a huge impact on my lifestyle as I am not able to fully contribute towards our family shopping and other needs, but because of our farm it has helped us,” he said.
Mr Datt, works for the South Sea Cruises Fiji as a sales rep. He has great deal of customer service experience with guests and partners within the tourism industry.
His interest in agriculture began while in high school. “We never did gardening on a large scale; and the poultry farm has been there for four years.”
“Gardening started during the spare time we had after work. Since the COVID-19 we have all the time to focus on our farming. Gardening with the family is actually a fun family bonding time.
“We hardly spend any money on vegetable shopping and then we have our poultry farm which has also reduced our frozen meat shopping.
Mr Datt learnt about working in poultry farm management from his late father, Dharmendra Datt, a senior Police officer.
“He started his poultry farm at that time with 15 ducks and 10 chickens. Now we have over 40 ducks at home and 50 plus chickens.”
