- SHALVEEN CHAND

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has urged global co-operation because the coming times would test economies around the world.

In a video message, Mr Bainimarama spoke from Kadavu as he toured areas damaged by Tropical Cyclone Harold which struck early last month.

“The Fijians I have met have shown me the power of hope to overcome even the greatest challenges,” he said.

“These Fijians share my gratitude to our development partners like Australia, New Zealand and the multilateral banks whose support has given the whole of Fiji that

same reason for hope.

“But the demand for these challenges demands global co-operation like we have never seen before.”

Mr Bainimarama said with TC Harold, Fiji was fighting contagion and climate change at the same time.

And in Kadavu, rebuilding schools in damage stricken areas have been moved on top of the priority list by Mr Bainimarama. Mr Bainimarama and his team returned to Suva on Saturday night.

He requested stakeholders to rebuild damaged schools in Kadavu, particularly Kadavu Provincial Secondary School and Kavala Bay Primary School. He directed the Republic of Fiji Military Force engineers to assist in the rebuilding of the schools. Mr Bainimarama and his team visited Namuana Village in Tavuki where he held a talanoa session with villagers.

They asked the government to restore power supply. Powerlines were destroyed during the height of Tropical Cyclone Harold. Mr Bainimarama assured villagers that rehabilitation works would be carried out accordingly. He also thanked civil servants for a job well done at this time.
