Trial date set for man who al­legedly tried to drown wife

Aman who is al­leged to have en­dan­gered his wife’s life by forc­ing her head un­der wa­ter will have his trial com­mence at the High Court in Suva from July 1.

The case of Vi­jay Ku­mar was called be­fore Judge Jus­tice Daniel Goundar yes­ter­day, how­ever, Ku­mar was not pro­duced in court as he was re­manded in cus­tody at the Suva Re­mand Cen­tre.

De­fence lawyer from the Le­gal Aid Com­mis­sion, Nam­rata Mishra told the court that her client was ab­sent be­cause he was in re­mand.

State pros­e­cu­tor from the Of­fice of the Di­rec­tor of Pub­lic Pros­e­cu­tions, Kim­berly Semisi told the court that the State would call two wit­nesses in the mat­ter, one would be the com­plainant and the other would be the med­i­cal of­fi­cer.

Jus­tice Goundar has fixed the trial to be heard from July 1 to July 3. A pro­duc­tion or­der has been is­sued for the ac­cused to be brought to court for his court hear­ings. The mat­ter has been ad­journed for a pre-trial con­fer­ence on June 15.
