ort De­na­rau Ma­rina based Sea Mercy Fiji was in the Lau Group re­cently as­sist­ing Fi­jians with food do­na­tions fol­low­ing the wrath of Trop­i­cal Cy­clone and the COVID-19 pan­demic.

Sea Mercy Fiji pres­i­dent Nigel Skeggs said they com­pleted their North­ern Lau Food Re­lief Ini­tia­tive for the fam­i­lies in the hard-hit com­mu­ni­ties of Ciko­bia, Avea and Susui last fort­night.

“The yacht­ing and sail­ing com­mu­nity at De­na­rau pulled to­gether and raised $10,000 needed to pur­chase and de­liver one month of food sup­plies for each fam­ily mem­ber of the men­tioned com­mu­ni­ties,” Mr Skeggs said.

“To help with the peo­ple who were strug­gling not hav­ing money to buy sta­ple food; a lot of their root crops has been rot­ting in the ground. Their source of in­come is fish­ing. Ba­si­cally our job is to help where we can and where we see a need and we get out help­ing, “he said

“On be­half of Tui Susui and Susui vil­lage we would like to con­vey our ap­pre­ci­a­tion and our big vi­naka vakalevu for the kind as­sis­tance that we had re­ceived,” Susui vil­lage head man Sekope Duri said. SMF has also loaned a de­sali­na­tion unit to Gov­ern­ment that can make 50 tonnes of water per day while at sea.

“We have loaned to the Fi­jian gov­ern­ment un­til next year so that it can as­sist com­mu­ni­ties liv­ing off the main is­lands with their water sup­ply,” Mr Skeggs said.

Ac­cord­ing to the Mr Skeggs the de­sali­na­tion unit has been loaned to the Nat­u­ral Dis­as­ter Man­age­ment Of­fice (NDMO).
