Monitor All Parking Spaces, Kumar Tells

Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar has urged councils across the country to monitor parking spaces. Ms Kumar made the comment after meeting the Nadi business and ratepayers’ community on Wednesday.

“My instruction to all the councils would be that they have to monitor all the parking spaces and make sure taxis don’t operate from parking space with metres because this is illegal,” she said.

“Here we have ratepayers who are not happy with it and they want this to change, and this is the challenge we have.”

Ms Kumar said she would meet the Fiji Roads Authority, Land Transport Authority and Police on those matters.

“All these traffic jams and illegal operations in the area are not acceptable and this is where the ratepayers are expressing their concerns,” she said.

“One thing I will say that is an issue throughout Fiji is taxis and private cars operating illegally.”

Roading in Nadi town

Ms Kumar said the business houses raised some pertinent issues they faced in Nadi town.

“They simply say the current road and the traffic flow within the town are not good enough for business. Their opinions are that when the visitors arrive from Nadi Airport or from the resorts and they want to enter into Nadi Town, they have to go from the back road and that’s not a very good impression of Nadi Town.”

Nadi to be declared city on October 10

Ms Kumar said: “We are planning to declare Nadi as a city in October of 2020 to mark Fiji’s 50th anniversary of independence so the preparation is taking place.”
