Man ap­peals 12 years sen­tence for drug charge

A 27-year-old man, who was jailed for 12 years for cul­ti­vat­ing 170 mar­i­juana plants in 2016, has filed an ap­peal against his con­vic­tion and sen­tence.

Alif­er­eti Ra­tok­ab­ula ap­peared be­fore Jus­tice Chan­dana Pre­mati­laka at the Fiji Court of Ap­peal yes­ter­day rep­re­sented by Le­gal Aid Com­mis­sion lawyer, Salote Nase­dra.

He was convicted for one count of un­law­ful cul­ti­va­tion of il­licit drugs by the High Court in Suva, and was sen­tenced to 12 years im­pris­on­ment with a non­pa­role pe­riod of 11 years. As per Ms Nase­dra’s re­quest, Jus­tice Pre­mati­laka or­dered for writ­ten sub­mis­sions and amended grounds of ap­peal by July 28.

He also or­dered the state to file their writ­ten sub­mis­sions on or be­fore Septem­ber 1. The mat­ter will be called for men­tion on Septem­ber 1.
