Man appeals 12 years sentence for drug charge
A 27-year-old man, who was jailed for 12 years for cultivating 170 marijuana plants in 2016, has filed an appeal against his conviction and sentence.
Alifereti Ratokabula appeared before Justice Chandana Prematilaka at the Fiji Court of Appeal yesterday represented by Legal Aid Commission lawyer, Salote Nasedra.
He was convicted for one count of unlawful cultivation of illicit drugs by the High Court in Suva, and was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment with a nonparole period of 11 years. As per Ms Nasedra’s request, Justice Prematilaka ordered for written submissions and amended grounds of appeal by July 28.
He also ordered the state to file their written submissions on or before September 1. The matter will be called for mention on September 1.
