The Ministry of Health and Medical Services is pleading with the public to show compassion towards our returning Fijian citizens. Acting Permanent Secretary Dr James Fong made the impassioned plea while announcing Fiji’s two new border quarantine cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number to three.
Both cases had been repatriated from India on July 1 along with 107 other passengers on board a Garuda Indonesia charter flight.
One of the cases is a 37-year-old son of the first border quarantine case, a 66-year-old man who tested positive on Sunday.
The second case, a 36-year-old female, had been in Chennai, India, where she accompanied her husband who was undergoing medical treatment.
“The 37-year-old male currently has mild symptoms. [He and his father] have been transferred from our Nadi [facility] to the Lautoka facility,” Dr Fong said.
“This is a precautionary measure because the father has some pre-existing medical conditions and he is of an advanced age.
“Our border quarantine case three, the 36-year-old was tested for COVID-19 while in the quarantine facility and her test was positive this morning [yesterday] in the Fiji Centre for Disease Control.
“She is in a stable condition and has been transferred along with her husband to our Nadi isolation facility.”
Dr Fong said test results for the patient’s husband and the other passengers were expected today.
He said Government wouldn’t neglect its own citizens overseas because they’re also people of this country.
Dr Fong has reassured the public that none of the passengers were out in the public.
