Man Who Al­legedly Killed Wife at Ki­noya Home Pleads Guilty

A53-year-old farmer has pleaded guilty to mur­der­ing his 47-year-old wife in Ki­noya in De­cem­ber last year.

Fatai Peni, who al­legedly slit his wife’s throat fol­low­ing an ar­gu­ment, ap­peared be­fore Judge Jus­tice Daniel Goundar in the High Court in Suva yes­ter­day.

Fatai did not dis­pute the con­tents of the sum­mary of facts and the knife pre­sented as ev­i­dence by the Office of the Di­rec­tor of Pros­e­cu­tions. He al­legedly used a knife to slit the vic­tim’s stabbed her.

Jus­tice Goundar asked the ac­cused whether his in­ten­tion was to kill the vic­tim; the ac­cused said yes.

Jus­tice Goundar then asked throat and him again what was on mind; he said death.

The court also heard that his lawyer, Mele Rati­dara, re­ceived the psy­chi­atric re­port on the ac­cused late Mon­day af­ter­noon, and had not gone through the re­port thor­oughly.

Ms Rati­dara told the court that the as­sess­ment was rel­e­vant to­wards his client’s mit­i­ga­tion. The case was ad­journed to Fri­day for mit­i­ga­tion and sen­tenc­ing. Fatai was fur­ther re­manded. his
